EPISD’s superintendent since September 2013 and the 2015 Texas Latino Superintendent of the Year — was recognized for implementing innovative academic programs in the District, as well as for his efforts to bring equity in quality education to all EPISD schools. Under his leadership, the District increased the academic opportunities available to students and provided financial stability.

“We are fortunate to have a dynamic and compassionate superintendent such as Juan Cabrera, who is willing to roll up his sleeves and work on behalf of every student, regardless of the ZIP code in which he or she lives,” said EPISD Board President Dori Fenenbock. “His leadership has created a culture where whole-child growth and development are the focus for every employee in the District.”

The Green-Garner Award is awarded to a large urban school superintendent or school board member in alternate years. The winner is considered to be the urban educator of the year.

Along with Cabrera, the Council of Great City Schools named eight other superintendents as finalists: John Allison from Wichita Public Schools; Alberto Carvalho from Miami-Dade County Public Schools; Eric Gordon of Cleveland Metropolitan School District; Michael Grego from Pinellas County Public Schools in Florida; Kaya Henderson of the District of Columbia Public Schools; Barbara Jenkins of Orange County (Florida) Public Schools; Mary Ronan of Cincinnati Public Schools; and Leticia Rodriguez-Rosario of New York City Department of Education in the Bronx.

The winning superintendent will receive $10,000 to present in the form of a scholarship to a student of his or her choice. The winner of the Green-Garner Award will be announced Thursday evening in Miami.
