Spotlight School Focus Areas: Learner Centered-Instruction & Supportive Culture
Learner-Centered Instruction
Teachers prioritize deep learning through inquiry-based projects that connect academic content with real-world application. In one project, students partnered with the Frazier History Museum to design their own exhibits on West African Kingdoms, presenting their final products to teachers, families, and community partners.
Authentic Student Experiences
Since implementing project-based learning, there has been a whole-school shift toward community-connected learning, with learning expanding beyond the classroom, thanks to contributions from local experts and organizations. The school’s STEAM-based “We Build It Better” curriculum and the student-created school newsletter Bruin Nation News, allow students to demonstrate learning through authentic creation, innovation, and communication via media.
Supportive Culture
Belonging and student well-being are at the heart of East Hardin’s mission. Programs established at the school promote leadership, empathy, and connection. The CharacterStrong curriculum focuses on safety and mental health support for students. A signature feature of the school’s culture is The Marigold Effect, which invites anyone on campus to nominate “Marigold Members”, who uplift and nurture others. This initiative, alongside peer collaboration platforms like The Alchemy Collaborative and storytelling projects, ensures every student has a voice and feels seen.
“Our students don’t just complete projects—they create solutions, share their voices, and learn how to make a difference. Every lesson connects back to who they are and what they can contribute.”
