Expansion of New Tech Network and project-based learning were the focus of Winton Woods Superintendent Anthony Smith’s annual State of the Schools address Sept. 1.
Addressing a crowd of parents, community members, staff and business leaders, he said the development of that learning approach will help the district to refocus its mission to “actively engage and challenge all learners to reach their maximum potential.”
“We know this works,” Smith said, pointing to higher Ohio Graduation Test scores and passing rates for students in the district’s Academy of Global Studies, a New Tech Network school that utilizes project-based learning. He noted that ACT scores for his AGS juniors and seniors were higher than for students in the traditional high school.
“We are a district that creates opportunities,” Smith said, citing the addition of full-day preschool this year, the soccer team’s trip to China over the summer to participate in an international soccer tournament, and the addition of scholarship opportunities with the creation of girls’ crew/rowing and boys’ lacrosse teams in the spring.
He also announced a new partnership with The Underground in Forest Park that offers an after-school program for students in grades nine-12.
Smith praised his staff for their hard work through all the educational reform the district is undertaking.
“My staff is passionate about ensuring students find success,” he said. “They strive to prepare students for an authentic 21st century educational experience and inspire students to find their purpose.”
Smith also addressed the district’s November bond issue.
“Why do our children deserve new buildings?” he asked. “Because Winton Woods City Schools is leading innovation in education.”
