Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) is getting educated on local education Friday. New Technology High School hosted the Senator for a tour and questions with students.
It’s not every day students see a member of Congress walking their halls.
“I thought it was really cool because I got to meet someone that actually was like in the government,” said New Tech freshman, Kierra Erickson.
Rounds toured the high school and fielded questions from students. He also had a few of his own.
Rounds: “What are you looking at studying? A little bit of everything?”
Erickson: “I’m looking at studying more animals.”
Rounds: “Okay. Biology type. Alright, great.”
The unique setup of the school allows students to pursue their education with career goals in mind.
“Same things going on in terms of our defense ministry and stuff,” said Rounds.
Rounds gave some suggestions for students on ways they can help their country and get a good job, which impressed students like Kierra Erickson.
“That means that he really cares about what he’s doing and that he’ll take time out of his day to come and meet students from a small town school. Which is really cool,” said Erickson.
New Tech High uses project based learning to help kids work together in groups to solve real-world problems.
