District drums up support

June 21, 2011

Parents and community members who make up the Lucia Mar Foundation for Innovation will spend this summer drumming up more support.

With a looming original deadline of June 30, the group now hopes to raise the $150,000 in start-up costs for two programs meant to give students 21st century learning skills by fall — or January at the absolute latest.

LMFI has raised $20,000 so far to help create the concrete examples that will take Lucia Mar Unified School District’s VISION 2020 to the next level.

The district’s board of trustees in April approved initial plans to build a New Tech High School on Nipomo High School’s campus. It is envisioned as an independent school with its own project-based curriculum and graduation requirements.
